Origin of Vargas

Recorded as Varga and Vargas, these are two similar surnames from quite different origins and nationality. Varga is usually Hungarian, and when of that origin is occupational for a shoemaker or cobbler. Not surprisingly occupational surnames were amongst the first to be created, however they did not usually become hereditary unless a son followed a father into the same line of business. Many did not, and when that happened, the son might be called both by his occupation, and just to make sure, that of his fathers as well! Vargas in the plural, is usually Spanish and Portugese.

As such it is locational from a town called Vargas, or topographical from a 'varga'. This was agricultural land which was flooded in the winter, in effect water meadows. However to add to the confusion the word in different areas of Spain can also mean a hut, and in other parts, a hillside. A further problem is that when the name is found in other countries outside those of its normal origin, it may not be possible to tell whether it is Hungarian or Iberian. Early examples of surname recordings include those of Diego Vargas of Valladolid, Spain, on April 12th 1519, and that of Maria Varga at Detk, in the region of Heves, in Hungary.

It should have Spanish origins and derive from the Spanish surname Vargas, in turn derived from the Visigothic term of the same name which means "good father".

This noble family had a castle in Vatolla in the Salerno area since 1300, the same castle where the philosopher Giovan Battista Vico lived towards the end of the 1600s.

The surname Vargas is typical of the Caserta area.

For nearly eight hundred years the surname Vargas has shone in the annals of Spain, and for more than six hundred it has been linked to the honorary nickname or coin Machuca, which the distinguished warrior Diego de Vargas acquired for his admirable courage and rare courage with which he crushed the Moors in the battle of Jerez, in the year 1232. Since those remote times, his descendants have exalted the reputation of his predecessor, shining in the Military Orders, standing out in battles with feats and noble feats and performing with applause and success important positions and high dignities, being many who up to our days maintain in Madrid, in Extremadura, in Andalusia and other parts the splendor of his enlightened lineage, so that among the oldest and leafiest genealogical trees of Spain, Its place is taken by the house of Vargas Machuca. One of its numerous branches was established in Seville since ancient times, where its illustrious sons have always been regarded as notorious sons of the family, enjoying all the honours, preeminence and distinctions corresponding to their class and enlightened lineage.

The Chronicler Gonzalo Argote de Molina points out that those of this lineage and surname of Vargas are natives of the Mountains of Burgos where they have their house and old land of sons dalgo and gentlemen located in the place of Presillas in the Valley of Toranzo (Cantabria ).

Some authors point out that this surname originates from Villasevil, in the Toranzo Valley. Another solar house of this lineage settled in the lands of Limia, next to Celanova (Galicia). The historian Labayru picks up another armory house in the town of Bilbao. Another family of this lineage settled in Belchite (Zaragoza).
