Origin of Ucedo

We have not been able to verify that both denominations correspond to the same lineage, as some authors suppose. Nor are we inclined to accept that it originates from the mountains of Asturias, from which it passed to Castilla la Vieja, as it is also read. It is very likely that another version is more accurate according to which this family comes from the town of Uceda, a judicial district and province of Guadalajara, whose name it took as a surname.

Fray Pedro de Uceda y Guerrero belonged to this surname, a Spanish poet, scholar and Augustinian religious, born in Toledo in the first half of the 16th century and died around 1582, in an unknown place. Considered, due to the characteristics of his original poetry, as one of the members of the so-called "Salmantic school of poetry", he was also one of the most prominent intellectuals of his time. After graduating in Theology, he obtained a doctorate in the subject and taught at the two most important centers of higher education in Spain in the 16th century: the universities of Alcalá de Henares and Salamanca. It was during his stay in the classrooms of Salamanca that he met some of the poets of his school, including some brothers of the religious order, such as the Augustinian Fray Pedro Malón de Chaide, Fray Basilio Ponce de León and Fray Alonso de Mendoza. Among the theoretical works of fray Pedro de Uceda y Guerrero, it is worth mentioning the titled Silva de les les lesions sobre el Apocalipsis y Lecturas escolásticas, both of which have disappeared to this day. Regarding his original poetic production, it is known that he left a manuscript entitled Poesías latinas y españolas, a work that is not preserved today.
