Origin of Montagut

All these surnames are modalities of the same and ancient Navarrese lineage, whose original site was located in the town of Monteagudo, in the Merindad de Tudela. This house belonged to Ricohombres, Lords and Stewards and one of the first in Navarre. From said town of Monteagudo, from which they took their last name, their individuals spread throughout France, Catalonia, Aragon and Valencia. The main progenitors of these branches were two brothers, the eldest of whom went on to marry in France, and the youngest in Aragon.

As we have already said, the Monteagudo house in this region is very old. Fernando de Monteagudo was one of the Grandees of Navarra who in 1231 swore the capitulations of friendship and adoption of the King of Navarre with Don Jaime I of Aragon. In 1254 he was this same Knight Seneschal of Navarre and signed another league established between the aforementioned Monarchs. In 1251, Sancho Fernández de Montagudo signed in the confederation that the Kings themselves made again.

Jaime Febrer cites the Navarrese knight Alfonso Montagut, who took part in the conquest of the Kingdom of Valencia, and because he was from one of the best-known houses of the twelve that elected King, he was highly favored by Don Jaime I. The Moors from Alcudia and from the banks of the Júcar, they tried many stratagems in Tous and Carlet to save themselves from the besieging armies, but Alfonso Montagut frustrated their tricks and forced them to surrender. King Jaime I, in attention to these services, ceded these towns to him.

Bernardo Montagut was also a Ricoman from Navarra, a gentleman of great prudence, whom Mosen Jaime Febrer fully praises, considering them as the captain with the most government of the entire army, both in peace and in war.

It also had a solar house in the town of Peralta, in the Merindad de Olite (Navarra), its owner Sancha Lopiz de Montagut, documented in the Navarrese firefight of 1366.

As indicated, most writers affirm that the Catalan Montagut, Montagudo or Monteagudo originate from Navarre. But in Catalonia there are two places called Montagut: one in the province of Lleida and the other in Girona, places that undoubtedly either gave their name to the Catalan Montagut, or took it from the Navarrese Montagut, who were perhaps their founders.

The aforementioned Jaime Febrer mentions the Catalan nobleman Guillermo Montagut, who went to Valencia from the County of Urgell. King Jaime I equaled him in his distinctions with the Navarrese Montagut, assigning him a place among the Ricohombres, in attention to his notorious nobility and accredited value of him.

The Catalan Montagut had houses in the city of Girona, in Vilanova de la Muga, in the same province, and in Seguer.

Other solar houses were located in Paúls, their owner Mateu Montagut; in the city of Lleida, its owner Mossén Hieronim de Montagut; in Llardecáns, its owner Joan Montagut; in Almatret, its owner Pere Montagut; in Sant Antolí (all in Lleida), its owner Pere Montagut; in Amposta, its owners Joan Montagut and Monserrat Montagut; in Miravet, its owners Bartomeu Montagut and Bartomeu Montagut; in Ascó, its owner Arnau Montagut; in Vinebre, its owner Domingo Montagut; in Mora, its owner Mossén Montagut; in Pratdip, its owner Francesch Montagut; in Alcover, its owner Melchior Montagut; in Valls, its owner Antoni Montagut; in Montblanch, its owner Franci Montagut; and in Biure (all in Tarragona), its owner Pere Montagut, documented in the Catalan Fogueración of 1553.

Many of his knights wore the Habit of the Order of Saint John. Berenguera Montagut was Lady of the same Order. She passed away on March 26, 1412.

Gaspar de Escolano says that those of the Montagut family, more commonly called Montagudo, grew so much in Aragon that when King James I went on to conquer the kingdom of Valencia, Bernardo de Monteagudo was Bishop of Zaragoza, and he adds the Chronicle of the aforementioned Monarch who accompanied him with one hundred and fifty knights of his blood and name. That is how it must have been, in effect, since, once the city of Valencia was won, the King granted them the favor of the entire street that was later called the Trinquete de Caballeros, from the Brotherhood of Our Lady to the parish church of San Esteban. Later it was called Calle de los Montagudo.

In Aragon, their owner Johan Montagut settled their solar houses in San Esteban de Litera (Huesca); in Sarrión, its owner Joan Martínez de Montagudo; in Cretas (both in Teruel), its owner, the widow of Montagut; in the city of Zaragoza, its owners Anthon de Montagudo, Bernat de Montagudo, Ferrando Montagudo, Johan de Montagudo, Pedro de Montagudo and Montagudo's widow; in Agón, its owner Johan de Montagudo; in Maluenda, its owner Miguel de Montagudo; in Torres de Berrellén, its ownerPedro de Montagut; in Tauste (all in Zaragoza), its owner Joan Enyegez de Montagut, documented in the Aragonese Fogueración of 1495; in Tamarite de Litera (Huesca) and in the city of Teruel, its owner Bartolomé de Monteagudo, cited in 1384-1387.

Of these Aragonese Montagudo, but already established in Valencia, was: Pedro de Montagudo, to whom the Conquering King granted the towns and places of Alcudia de Carlet (València), Rasanlany and Alfarp and their castle, and Benimodo , Carlet, Mazalet and Panquer.

Through successive links the Lordships of Alcudia and Resalany passed to the family of Castellví (of the Counts of Carlet), and of Híjar (Lords of the Baronies of Jalón and Gata), and finally, to the family of Escribá (Gentlemen of the Barony of Argelita).

Arnau Montagut was a resident of Forcall (Castellón) in 1396. Jacme Montagut was a resident of Onda (Castellón) in 1379. Alamany Montagut, Johan Montagut and Pere Montagut were residents of Puebla de Vallbona (València) in 1427. Arnau Montagut and Veyá Montagut were residents of Valencia in 1306-1316. Joan de Montagut was a resident of Valencia in 1354-1373. Domingo Montagut was a resident of Benifaraig (València) in 1379. Rosselló de Montagut was the first settlers of Torrente (València) in 1248. Bernat Montagut was a resident of Villanueva de Castellón (València) in 1421. Pelegrí de Montagut was a resident of Gandía (València) ) in 1373. Johan de Montagut, Miguel de Montagut and Nicolau de Montagut were residents of Játiva (Alicante) in 1421. Bartholomeu de Montagut, Berenguer de Montagut, Bernat de Montagut, G. de Montagut and Pere de Montagut were among the settlers of Orihuela (Alicante) in 1300-1314. Blasco Montagudo was a repopulator of Benafer (Castellón) in 1379. Mosen Ferrando Montagut was Jury of the city of Valencia in 1370, and Mosen Pelegrí Montagut, Governor in 1384. Jacme Montagut was a resident of Liria (València) in 1427.

They were from the Order of Montesa: Bernardo Montagut, Subclavero, in 1370; Godofre Montagut, Knight, Commander of Benicarló and Vinaroz, in 1460; and Jofre Montagut, Knight, Commander of Alcalá de Chisvert, in 1470.

They were Aragonese Infanzones from the end of the 16th century: Antón Montagudo, a resident of Tamarite de Litera, Infanzón; and Jusepe Montagudo, from San Esteban de Litera.
