Origin of Alfarano

It should derive from the Greek name Alpheranas, but a derivation from an Italianization of the Arabic name Al Farrah cannot be excluded.

The Alfaranos formed a noble baronial family of Greek origin, related to the Capece, descended from Alano Signore d'Epiro. The Alfaranos exercised Lordship over many Salento lands, between 1571 and 1582 Tiberio Alfarano, born in Gerace (RC), designed the project for the extension of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, was made Beneficiary Cleric of St. Peter's and, in 1590, he was made archpriest.

The surname Alfarano is typically Apulian, in particular from Salento, with lineages also in Rome, Naples and Reggio.

Alfarani and Alferano are almost unique and are probably due to transcription errors of the previous one.
