Origin of Arcos

In the information on the surname Arco, the doubts that exist regarding whether Arco and Arcos are one and the same that originated in the town of Losarcos or Los Arcos, in the Merindad de Estella, in Navarra, are recorded. We will add in this place that in Navarra, Aragon and La Rioja families with the surname Arcos settled. Indeed, in the Fogueraciones made in 1300 and 1329 several houses in the towns of Larraga are mentioned, being their owner Johan de los Arcos; in Sesma, its owner María de los Arcos, and in Arroniz, its owner Martín de los Arcos.

With the modality of Arquos (which are undoubtedly the ancient forms of the beginnings of Spanish) we also find solar houses in the town of Larraga, their owner Johan de los Arquos; in the town of Caparroso, its owner Miguel del Arquo; Elvira de los Arquos; two in the city of Estella, its owners Martín de los Arquos and Johan de los Arquos, cited in the Fire Burnings of 1350 and 1366.

These doubts and different opinions advise us to treat both surnames separately, as we do, since this way the data we have collected about them will gain clarity.
